Ancient Chineses Astronomy
This picture comes from a painting from a Chinese temple, two gods with serpent tails hold a compass and a square, the ancient symobls for measure, movement, and rite. Surounding them are stars and constellations, above them a wheel of stars representing the zodiac? The snake tails form a pillar and this can be looked at as the pillar or pole of life, the axis-mundi around which the earth spins and from which the stars are measured.
